Jose Antonio Ponce

I’m a writer living and working in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I’m also a working musician, playing bass alongside guitarist Dave Woodruff and the multi-instrumentalist George Giganti as The Windsor Creek Trio

I’m currently in the process of publishing a book of modern proverbs and working on a collection of poetry, a novel, a short story collection, a cookbook….blah…blah…blah, like every other writer in the universe. I write for Speak Without Interruption.com, an international online magazine and Rhyme Writers, a website dedicated to verse.

Other credits include a  gig as associate producer of the short documentary film "Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque" working with and learning from veteran director Thom Eberhardt and his wife, writer/producer Christine Vasquez. We are now working on a series of short documentaries that feature legendary New Mexico musicians. Our latest film features one of these New Mexicans, Lewie Wickham

I am currently working as an associate producer with Thom Eberhardt, Christine Vasquez and producer Ken Segura-Knolls on the feature film "Los Wildcats del Norte"  about a group of young adults who form a band out of necessity and find themselves and their lives changing for the better.

Each month I offer a sampling of poetry, essays and short stories as well as columns related to music and the music industry. Please browse and let me know what you think. Send your comments to qandajose@joseantonioponce.com

Other Interests

With help from a lot of friends, the New Mexico Music Awards, annually recognizes excellence in music recorded and produced within the state of New Mexico. In truth, it wasn’t my idea, but rather the brainstorm of New Mexico engineer and producer Eric Larson and other New Mexico producers, engineers, artists and songwriters like Tom Mitchell and Tim Cordova, who, in 1985, realized that the best way to elevate the quality of music produced in New Mexico was through competition. We’re 24 years old and the longest running and most successful music awards program in New Mexico.

Eric passed away in April of 2005 and we thought the best way to remember him was by creating an endowment in his name. The Eric Larson Endowment at the University of New Mexico was created by Eric’s friends to assist junior or senior students at UNM who have declared music or a related field as their major. We’ll give away our first scholarship this year.

I also keep busy, as a member of the New Mexico Music Commission, an organization promoting the diverse music and artists, producers and songwriters of New Mexico and as a board member and vice president of the  New Mexico Jazz Workshop promoting Jazz, Salsa and Blues and educating young people about this most American art form.
